    A white or yellow flowered climbing vine with long bean like seed pods. It is a vigorous climber which flowers almost all the year round. The creamy flowers are borne in a large cluster and are sweet smelling. Butterflies are attracted to the flowers. When grown from seed, the plant passes through a juvenile stage with very thin brown leaves of various shapes and sizes. Grow up a trellis for best appreciation of the flowers. Hardy and versatile.

    Used by settlers as a substitute for elderberries in winemaking, this fast growing hardy shrub regenerates at bush margins after fires. It has pink flowers and large serrated deciduous leaves. The leaves make a tea which is soothing and cleansing for sore and dusty eyes. Fast growing cover plant. Berries in late summer, bird distributed. Highly favoured by possums. Can grow from cuttings or seed.

    Weighing 2-3kg, but can grow up to 10kg
    Occurs all around New Zealand and southern Australia.
    Blue moki has a deep compressed body, moderate sized head and mouth with thick fleshy lips, small paired fins. Large scales. Blue-gray above, with several dark bands, silver-grey on flanks, white below. Distributed all around New Zealand but most common around the South Island, and from Cape Runaway to Hawkes Bay to depths of 100m. Taken mainly by trawling and set nets. Caught all year round. A small resource, perhaps yielding 1000 tonnes per annum. Of all related species occurring in New Zealand, trumpeter is a small commercial resource, and copper moki is uncommon. The red moki, in the related family Cheilodactylidae, is common but threatened because it is a very slow-growing species.

    A common small bushy coastal tree reaching 10m in height. These very poisonous plants mainly grow near the sea, either wild or in cultivation. They are easily identified by the numerous pale leaf spots seen when held to the light, and by the purple berries. Both the native ngaio (M. laetum) and Australian ngaio (M. insulare) should be regarded as equally harmful.

    This fern will creep along the ground till it finds a tree, it will then grow up high into the tree. Its leaves change as it matures. It is the only climbing Blechnum, and spreads by rhizomes (an underground stem). The fertile fronds form only on the climbing rhizomes, and can be quite high up. They have very long thin pinnae.
