  • 76 -around, round, o about?-

    Nota d'uso
Round o around ( around è più comune nell'inglese americano) si usano entrambi in riferimento a un movimento circolare: The hands go round the clock, le lancette dell'orologio si muovono in tondo.
Da questa “circolarità”, around, round derivano un significato di “dappertutto” nel senso di “tutto intorno”, che appartiene anche a about ( around è più comune nell'inglese americano): The toys are scattered about (o around, round) the room, i giocattoli sono sparpagliati per tutta la stanza.
Con il significato di “attorno”, about è usato meno spesso rispetto a round (in inglese britannico) e around (in inglese americano): The guests were seated round the table, gli ospiti erano seduti attorno al tavolo.
About si usa più comunemente di around con il significato di “approssimativamente, circa”: The company has about a thousand employees, la compagnia ha circa mille impiegati; round about si usa colloquialmente con lo stesso signficato: I think it's round about one o'clock, penso sia circa l'una; ma round da solo non si usa mai in queste espressioni.
