74 -economic, economical o cheap?-
Per indicare, invece, qualcosa che fa risparmiare perché particolarmente efficiente si usa l'aggettivo economical: What is the most economical car?, qual è l'auto più economica? Infine, l'aggettivo cheap corrisponde a “economico” nel senso di “poco costoso”: This restaurant is very cheap, questo ristorante è molto economico. Talvolta cheap viene usato anche in senso spregiativo: She always wears cheap clothes, indossa sempre vestiti da poco.English-Italian dictionary > -economic, economical o cheap?-

75 -equable o equitable?-
Nota d'usoL'aggettivo equable significa “costante, uniforme”, in riferimento a ciò che non subisce grandi variazioni: an equable climate, un clima temperato; her equable temperament means that he always stays calm, il carattere imperturbabile di lei fa sì che lui resti sempre calmo. Non si deve confondere equable con equitable, che invece significa “equo, giusto”: Is democracy an equitable means of government? la democrazia è un sistema di governo giusto?; to distribute money in an equitable manner, distribuire il denaro in modo equo. -
76 -grades o degrees?-

78 -sensible o sensitive?-
Nota d'usoIl significato primario dell'aggettivo sensible non è “sensibile”, ma “sensato, assennato”, specie in riferimento a decisioni basate più sul buonsenso che sui sentimenti (e a chi le prende): It would be sensibile to take an umbrella in case it rains, sarebbe sensato portare un ombrello nel caso venga a piovere; Lucy is growing up into a sensibile young woman, Lucy sta diventando una giovane donna assennata. L'aggettivo sensitive in genere vuol dire “sensibile” nei significati principali della parola italiana, cioè in riferimento a chi è permaloso o suscettibile: to be very sensitive to any form of criticism, essere molto sensibile a ogni forma di critica; a chi ha facilità a comprendere i sentimenti degli altri ed è gentile con loro: He was a sensitive colleague who always listened sympathetically, era un collega sensibile che ascoltava sempre con grande comprensione; a qualcosa che suscita forti emozioni: Euthanasia is a sensitive issue, l'eutanasia è una questione sensibile; a qualcosa o qualcuno che reagisce in modo intenso a uno stimolo: Highly perfumed products may irritate sensitive skin, i prodotti molto profumati possono irritare la pelle sensibile. -
79 -strict o severe?-
In ambito scolastico, strict si riferisce per lo più alla disciplina: Our teachers were very strict and there was always silence in the classroom, i nostri insegnanti erano molto severi e in classe c'era sempre silenzio. -
80 -to lose o to miss?-
Nota d'usoI verbi to lose e to miss possono essere entrambi tradotti in italiano con il verbo perdere, ma vengono usati in contesti diversi. To miss significa perdere nel senso di “non raggiungere in tempo” o “non essere presenti a un evento”: Ho perso il treno, I missed the train; Ha perso la lezione, she missed the lesson. To lose esprime invece il concetto di perdita vera e propria: Perdo sempre le chiavi, I always lose my keys; Ha perso i genitori nel 2005, she lost her parents in 2005.
