Форма торгов, способ продажи (товаров, имущества несостоятельного должника, приватизируемого предприятия и т.п.), при котором покупателем признается лицо, предложившее в ходе проведения А. наивысшую цену. А. может применяться также при размещении заказов, в этом случае победителем признается лицо, предложившее наиболее низкую цену. В российском законодательстве вторая форма используется исключительно при размещении государственных и муниципальных заказов. В международной практике различают «английский А.», на котором покупатели подают заявки, начиная с низкой цены, покупатель, подавший заявку с наивысшей ценой, объявляется победителем и платит цену этой заявки; «А. Викри» (закрытый А. второй цены), на котором покупатели подают заявки в запечатанном конверте, и победитель платит цену наивысшей из отвергнутых заявок; «голландский А.», на котором аукционер начинает с очень высокой цены и последовательно снижает цены, первый покупатель, принявший предложенную цену, объявляется победителем и платит эту цену; «двусторонний А»., на котором заявки подают и покупатели, и продавцы.
