20 permitirse
1 to allow oneself, afford* * *VPR1) (=atreverse a)me permito recordarle que está prohibido fumar — frm may I remind you that smoking is forbidden frm
2) (=concederse) to allow o.s.•
poder permitirse (hacer) algo — to be able to afford (to do) sth* * *
■permitirse verbo reflexivo
1 to permit o allow oneself: me permito recordarle que..., may I remind you that...
2 to be allowed: no se permite cantar, singing is not allowed
3 (un gasto) no puedo permitirme comprar ese coche, I can't afford to buy that car
¿To allow, to let o to permit?
The teacher doesn't allow/permit us to smoke in class. The teacher doesn't allow/permit smoking in class. Smoking is not allowed.
To let necesita un complemento y el infinitivo sin to: El profesor no nos deja fumar en clase. The teacher doesn't let us smoke in class. No se usa en voz pasiva. ➣ Ver nota en let.
