Maori feathered cloak.The base of the cloak was made from f;ax fibre (muka) which had been washed, bleached to almost white and softened. The fibres would then be rolled together until a long yarn was formed, which was then woven into the large rectangle, shaped at the shoulders and hips. On to this was fastened the feathers, the most prized ones being those of the huia and kiwi ( especially the rare white albino kiwi). -

They have very long thin pinnae. -

In doing so, it prevents the seaweed from being covered all over with algae, which would shade it out. Unable to grow, the featherweed then dies. The parore provides a cleaning service to coastal reefs. Where it is caught in gillnets for baiting crayfish pots, the environment degrades. -

Recipe: Take some very fresh kumara, straight from the garden, if possible. Wash thoroughly, then grate. Place in a shallow baking dish and sprinkle with sugar. Over the top of the grated kumara place some broad slices of kumara. This will keep the mixture from hardening in the oven. Bake for an hour at 180C. When hot this is similar to a steamed pudding, and may be served with cream, or custard. when cold it may be sliced like bread, and spread with butter. -

These are coastal fishing areas customarily of special significance to iwi or hapu as a source of food or for spiritual/cultural reasons that can be set up under the Fisheries Act 1996. A management committee nominated by tangata whenua can then propose regulations for management of all fishing within those areas. -

Hapu of the Ngati WhatuaThe people of Te Uri O Hau were among the first Maori to populate Aotearoa, descending from the Waka - Mahuhu (one of the pre-hekenui waka of 1350 circa & one out of a few to bring a colonizing capacity [one other being the waka - Mamaari]) In those earlier days it was said that the people lived at Muriwhenua (in the North) that there were other people here on our arrival (the patupaiarehe) life continued harmoniously until the murder of a patupaiarehe occurred causing upheaval & fighting amongst the people of Muriwhenua who then all went their separate ways... in those days the people were more nomadic & raw they moved about & it wasn't until after the eponymous ancestor of Te Uri O Hau settled at Pouto that Te Uri O Hau became known as such. -
18 Te Wairoa
"The buried village"The 1886 Tarawera eruption buried the tourist village of Te Wairoa, including McRae's Hotel (Rotomahana Hotel). The village has been excavated and is now open to the public. During the euption, some houses, with their inhabitants still inside, were buried. Other houses were left empty as their owners fled the village. One of the two buildings to survive the eruption was the whare of a Maori guide, Sophia. More than 60 people sheltered there during the night. The other building was the runanga or meeting house. At the Rotomahana Hotel, the inhabitants had to first leave one room when the roof collapsed under the hail of ash, rocks and mud, and then the entire hotel. One guest died when the hotel veranda collapsed but others made it to safety in the guide's whare. The schoolteacher and five of his family were buried under tons of mud and ash. Others in the house managed to escape and sheltered for the rest of the night in a chicken house.<TE mu parsonage.jpg"> -
19 Te Whiti o Rongomai
(c1830-1907)Leader of passive resistance against European confiscation of Maori Land, and a Maori perhaps more unfairly treated by pakeha settlers than any other. He was born in Taranaki, a member of the Te Ati Awa tribe, and educated at a mission school, where he was noted for his aptitude for bible studies. After he left school he set up a flour mill at a place called Warea, about 35 kilometres south-west of New Plymouth, and was living peacefully in the parihaka.area when in March 1860, the early days of the Land Wars, the undefended settlement was shelled from the sea by a British warship, the Niger, and then burned to the ground by colonial troops. He later established Parihaka. -
