    1899-1964
       Nacido Samuel Neufeld, hermano de Sigmund Neufeld, futuro jefe de produccion de PRC, dirige cortometrajes desde 1926, y largometrajes desde 1933. Probablemente el mas prolifico realizador norteamericano de la era sonora, dirigio, sobre todo, westerns. Por sus manos paso una parte importante de los viejos heroes del genero, en peliculas de una hora de duracion y argumentos eternamente repetidos. Solo leer su filmografia produce cierto vertigo. Establecerla rigurosamente es una tarea ardua, especialmente en lo relativo al orden cronologico estricto, por lo que en esta ocasion mas que en ninguna otra hay que entender que ese orden es susceptible de correccion. Utiliza los seudonimos de Peter Stewart y Sherman Scott. Se ha prescindido de tres aparentes largometrajes, situados al final de su carrera y obtenidos, cada uno de ellos, por super posicion de dos episodios del serial televisivo “Hawkeye and the Last of the Mohicans”. Aunque el nivel medio de los filmes de Sam Newfeld es realmente bajo, hay que citar dos curiosidades: Harlem on the Prairie (1937) esta interpretado integramente por negros, y The Terror of Tiny Town (1938), por enanos, que se mueven en decorados de tamano normal.

       Director, guionista, productor y, en ocasiones, compositor y montador de sus peliculas, el antiguo actor Robert Emmett Tansey, de familia vinculada al medio artistico, rodo a lo largo de su vida casi cincuenta westerns, la practica totalidad de su filmografia, con los nombres de Robert Tansey, Robert Emmett, Criag Hutchison, o con su nombre completo. No es un realizador distinguido, tiene poco que ofrecer como creador de universos peculiares, y se limita a una labor rutinaria de plasmacion de historias, las mas de las veces banales, interpretadas por estrellas del western de primer o segundo orden. Como actor, debuto en 1911, pero, a diferencia de su hermano, sus atractivos en la pantalla fueron escasos debido a que era cuatro anos mayor, lo que le convertia, en un actor adolescente y no en un actor infantil.

       Ford Beebe es, sin duda, uno de los reyes de los seriales. Dirigio un buen punado de ellos a lo largo de su medio siglo de carrera como director, con frecuencia compartiendo realizacion con alguno de sus colegas especialista en ese quehacer. Westerns, peliculas de ciencia ficcion, de misterio, comedias, dramas; todo vale para este profesional, del que se recuerda su Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe (1940), serial en 12 episodios, cuya realizacion compartio con Ray Taylor. Nada es demasiado interesante en la obra de Ford Beebe, aunque cumple su funcion.

       Nacido en Paris, llega a Hollywood en 1915, llevando a sus espaldas una interesante experiencia teatral. Empieza a trabajar para el cine en 1916 como ayudante de direccion, y ya en 1917 dirige su primera pelicula. Trabaja para la unidad de produccion de Harry Sherman en las decadas de los 30 y los 40, realizando, en el terreno del western basicamente, sucesivas entregas de la serie protagonizada por William Boyd (Hopalong Cassidy);en la decada de los 50 se dedicara al vaquero cantante Gene Autry. Entre ambos parece transcurrir la vida profesional de este director, poco preocupado por los resultados artisticos de sus peliculas, y si interesado en preservar la “marca de fabrica” asociada a cada una de sus dos estrellas.

    1888-1952
       Actor y empresario teatral antes de la Primera Gue rra Mundial, despues se convierte en ayudante de direccion para Fox, trabajando con John Ford. En los anos 20 pasa a Universal, donde empieza a dirigir primero cortometrajes y despues peliculas de serie B, sobre todo thrillers y seriales diversos. En el sonoro, al que se adapta aceptablemente, trabaja con intensidad. Es, sin duda, uno de los realizadores mas prolificos del genero; mas de 80 westerns avalan su trayectoria, ni mas ni menos destacada que la de otros muchos, aunque no le falta buen pulso narrativo las mas de las veces. Trabaja, inevitablemente, con actores populares, y tambien prolificos, de los anos 30 y, en menor medida, 40. Peliculas de una hora de duracion, aproximadamente, con argumentos poco elaborados, y algun serial, dirigido en solitario a comienzos del sonoro, y ya en colaboracion unos diez anos despues, constituyen la inmensa mayoria de una filmografia inabarcable.

       Realizador y guionista, Alan James, que popularizo su seudonimo, Alvin J. Neitz, repartio sus casi 80 realizaciones entre el cine mudo y el sonoro, a partes iguales. Curiosamente, y a pesar de que ambas funciones, la de director y la de guionista, las simultaneo, no es excesiva la cifra de las peliculas en que de sempeno ambos cometidos. Fue todo lo prolifico que las circunstancias –peliculas de una hora de duracion en productos baratos de consumo inmediato– aconsejaban. Casi la tercera parte de sus westerns sonoros los protagonizo el actor Ken Maynard.
