(1892-1967) Райс, ЭлмерДраматург. Некоторое время занимался адвокатской практикой, в 1914 дебютировал пьесой "Суд" ["On Trial"]. Стал широко известен после постановки пьесы "Счетная машина" ["The Adding Machine"] (1923), в которой осмысливалась проблема наступления технического прогресса на привычный образ жизни. Для творчества Райса характерен политический и социальный гротеск, известны также его антифашистские пьесы.
