slash and burn culture
A traditional farming system that has been used by generations of farmers in tropical forests and the savannah of north and east Africa. It is known to be an ecologically sound form of cultivation, and because the soil is poor in tropical rain forests it is a sustainable method of farming. It is still practised today, primarily in the developing countries. Small areas of bush or forests are cleared and the smaller trees burned. This unlocks the nutrients in the vegetation and gives the soil fertilizer that is easily taken up by plants. A few years later the soil is degraded and the farmer moves on to do the same at another site. The original ground is left fallow for anything up to 20 years so that the forest can regenerate. With the growth in population and in the subsequent need for more farming land to produce food, the method is increasingly being used today to clear large areas of tropical forests for cattle ranching, and in most cases the ground is not left fallow for long enough and, with modern mechanized farming systems, not enough tree stumps or suitable habitats for plant life are left to start the regeneration process. common mode rejection ratio
CMRR (abbreviation)
ratio of the voltage applied between a specified reference point and the input terminals, when connected together by a specified circuit, to the voltage required between the input terminals to produce the same value of the output
NOTE 1 – The common mode rejection ratio is usually expressed in decibels and can depend on the frequency, the waveform and the method of measurement.
NOTE 2 – Common mode rejection ratio can also apply to quantities other than voltage.

series mode rejection ratio
SMRR (abbreviation)
ratio of the series mode voltage causing a specified change in output information, to the voltage initiated by the measurand which would produce the same change
NOTE 1 – The series mode rejection ratio is usually expressed in decibels and may depend on the frequency, the waveform and the method of measurement.
NOTE 2 – Series mode rejection ratio can also apply to quantities other than voltage.
[IEV number 312-06-22]FR

prospective making current (for a pole of a switching device) the prospective current when initiated under specified conditions
NOTE The specified conditions may relate to the method of initiation, e.g. by an ideal switching device, or to the instant of initiation, e.g. leading to the maximum prospective peak current in an a.c. circuit, or to the highest rate of rise. The specification of these conditions is found in the relevant publications.
