    Девочка, родившаяся в 1986 у "суррогатной матери" [ surrogate mother] Мэри Б. Уайтхед и отца У. Стерна в результате искусственного оплодотворения. После рождения ребенка М. Уайтхед отказалась отдать его чете Стернов, что предусматривалось контрактом на сумму в 10 тыс. долл. Она отказалась от денег и оставила девочку у себя. Стерны подали в суд. По решению суда девочку передали Стернам и оформили удочерение. Однако в 1988 после многократных судебных разбирательств и юридических споров о приоритете контракта или материнства Верховный суд штата Нью-Джерси признал незаконным сам контракт. По решению Суда девочку должны были воспитывать Стерны, мать сохраняла родительские права и право посещать девочку. Акт удочерения был признан недействительным. Это дело вызвало бурные споры в средствах массовой информации и среди юристов
