Sincretismo has many forms, where the imposed Christian belief system shows evidence of an indigenous substrate, or the grafting on of African elements, as in “candomblé” of Brazil, or “santería” in the Caribbean. Other manifestations are the interiors, exteriors and statuary of colonial churches, which would have been decorated by indigenous craftsmen. A statue of the Virgin Mary, for example, may be given the features or attributes of a pre-Christian goddess of maternity and fertility. -
