Глагол to frighten наиболее нейтральный глагол этого ряда, не указывающий на силу эмоции или ее источник. Глагол to frighten smb может быть усилен такими сочетаниями, как: to frighten smb to death (out of one's wits, beyond measure, stiff) напугать/испугать кого-либо на смерть (не на шутку, чрезмерно, крайне); to be/to get frightened испугаться. Словосочетания to scare smb и to be/to get scared в значении "испугать, испугаться" соответственно в отличие от to frighten подразумевает что-либо опасное, нежелательное и неприятное в качестве источника испуга: she was aware of being followed and she was scared of the man who had been following her она чувствовала, что за ней кто-то идет, и боялась человека, следовавшего за ней; she stopped in the doorway scared of the strange sounds coming from the inside она остановилась в дверях, испугавшись странных звуков, доносившихся из комнаты; the sight of the pistol pointed at her scared her stiff от вида направленного на нее пистолета, она похолодела/окаменела/не могла двинуться от страха/ужаса. Глагол to startle в значении "вздрогнуть от ужаса" подразумевает неожиданность появления источника, вызывающего испуг и резкую реакцию в виде жеста или движения со стороны человека, испытывающего испуг: the voice behind her startled her голос за ее спиной заставил ее вздрогнуть; who is this? - she whispered with a start кто там? - в испуге/вздрогнув произнесла она; there was a loud crash behind the door, he started and made for the door за дверью послышался громкий звук падения чего-то тяжелого, он вскочил в испуге и бросился к двери. Глагол to terrify и сочетание to be terrified характеризуют очень сильный испуг: to terrify smb испугать кого-либо до ужаса/привести кого-либо в ужас/ужаснуть кого-либо; we rushed out of the house too terrified to look back мы бросились бежать из дома, в ужасе боясь даже оглянуться; we were terrified that the police would find where we had hidden the film мы были в ужасе от страха, что полиция найдет, где мы спрятали пленку. Выражения to be in a panic и to be panic-strikens подчеркивают такой сильный испуг, который мешает человеку в этот момент думать, разумно поступать: a few moment after the explosion the street was full of panic-strikens people running very in all directions через несколько минут после взрыва улица наполнилась людьми, бежавшими в панике/объятыми паникой и бежавшими во всех направлениях. Русским сочетаниям "посеять панику/страх" и "поддаться панике" соответствуют английские словосочетания to get panicky и to be overcome with panic. Сочетание to give smb the creeps/the jitters носит более разговорный характер и описывает состояние сильного испуга: the sight gave me the creeps от этого зрелища у меня мурашки пошли по телу; the house gives me the creeps - it is so dark and quiet в доме темно и очень тихо, у меня от его вида мурашки по телу пошли; she refuses to stay alone with this man, she says he gives her the creeps она ни за что не хочет оставаться с этим человеком наедине, она говорит, что он на нее наводит ужас
