Предполагают, что это слово произошло от цыганского spiv — воробей, так презрительно характеризуют того, кто существует, «подбирая крошки», оставленные более удачливыми партнёрами в криминальном или некриминальном мире. Существует ещё одно предположение, что это слово возникло от используемого полицией акронима VIPs (Very Important Persons — очень важные персоны), который, прочтённый наоборот, звучит как SPIV — suspected persons and itinerant vagrants — подозрительные личности и скитающиеся бродяги. A spivmobile — это экстравагантная машина, принадлежащая мошеннику и заставляющая задуматься о средствах, на которые она приобретена. Впервые слово spiv было упомянуто в 1934 г. и широко распространилось в Великобритании во время Второй мировой войны, когда подобные личности встречались часто. Они всегда могли приобрести дефицитные товары на чёрном рынке: сигареты, чулки, виски и т. п. Существует синоним wide boy «широкий парень» (от внушительных подплечников пиджака, делающих плечи очень широкими). -
