•• Происходит, видимо, от метафорического фразеологизма to tip the scales – надавить на чашу весов, изменить соотношение сил в чью-то пользу. Жаль, что это выражение отсутствует и в Новом БАРСе, и в ABBYY Lingvo. Tipping point, как кажется, восполняет отсутствие в английском языке метафорического слова, аналогичного русскому перелом ( переломный момент). Обычно в переводах это русское слово передается как turning point или watershed, но это все-таки другие метафоры, имеющие прямые соответствия в русском. Переводя на русский предложения с tipping point, можно, наверное, прибегнуть и к другой метафоре – критическая масса.
