•• В английском языке это слово одинаково интенсивно используется и в значении социальный, и в значении светский, не связанный со службой, работой. Реже – в значении общественный (как у нас в словосочетании – понемногу забываемом – общественная работа). Поэтому social work – это то, чем у нас занимаются социальные работники, т.е. социальное обслуживание престарелых, инвалидов и т.п. Social life – это, конечно, не совсем то, что у нас называют светской жизнью (я бы передал это английским high society или, шутливо, the life of rich and famous). Social life, пожалуй, ближе всего к нашему понятию неформальное общение. We met socially можно перевести Мы встречались в компаниях (или не по работе) или даже Мы где-то познакомились (если где-то, то вряд ли в служебной обстановке).
•• А что такое the social smokers? Тоже, по-видимому, те, кто курит «в компании» или «за компанию» (или просто изредка?) То же самое – social drinkers. Есть, к сожалению, и такое понятие, как social drug: One man had to be flown to a hospital after overdosing on GHB, a popular social drug (New York Times). Не будучи экспертом в этом деле, затрудняюсь предложить адекватный перевод. Может быть, бытовой наркотик?

В английском языке это слово широко используется и в значении социальный, и в значении светский или не связанный со службой, работой. Реже — в значении «общественный», например общественная работа. Social work — это социальное обслуживание престарелых, инвалидов и т. п. Social life обозначает русское понятие неформальное общение: we met socially — мы встречались в компаниях/ не по работе/в неофициальной обстановке. Social smokers — это те, кто курит в компании, за компанию или просто изредка. То же самое social drinkers. -
