SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION La Smithsonian Institution, en Washington DC, es el complejo de museos más grande del mundo. Fue fundado por el Congreso en 1846 gracias a fondos donados por el científico inglés James Smithson (de ahí su nombre) y en la actualidad está patrocinado por el gobierno estadounidense como centro para la ciencia y el arte. Posee alrededor de cien millones de piezas y catorce museos, que incluyen el National Museum of American History, la National Gallery of Art y el National Portrait Gallery.
