81 Norwich Shawl
A good quality fine silk shawl made in checks and stripes and embroidered afterwards. Later it was made of printed silk yarns. -
82 Paillette Satin
An all-silk dress fabric, woven in the 5-shaft warp satin weave from net silk yarns, mostly in shot effects. The ends per inch are not many more than the picks. -
83 Poule De Soie
A silk dress cloth, plain weave, made from nett silk yarns in the poplin style with a greater number of ends than picks giving a cross rib. Usually two-fold organzine warp and tram weft. -
84 Purse Twists
A term used in the early 19th century for the very beautiful silk yarns used for embroidery work, net work and decorating cloth and velvet. They were of such brilliant dyeing that " it was difficult to distinguish from gold." The royal arms, over the throne at St. James's Palace, are entirely embroidered in this silk. -
85 Suja Knani
A very fine silk fabric made in the Punjab, at Bhawalpur, from moonga silk yarns. It is figured all over with floral effects in many sizes. -
86 Velours Chiffon
Fine quality velvet made with silk yarns for all the warp and cotton weft. The silk pile is close cut. -
87 Altesse
A very fine woven dress fabric, plain weave, made from all-silk yarns, crepe weft. -
88 Begum Behar Sari
A beautiful check Saree of cotton and silk yarns, made at Tangail in Bengal, on hand looms. -
89 Bolting Cloth
A gauze weave fabric woven from silk yarns in the gum state and fine reed and pick. A very firm finish is given to the cloth. Used for fine sifting, stencils, dress trimmings, and wig foundations (also known as Millers Gauze). Originally made of woollen yams, then linen, and used for sifting flour after being ground. The term is derived from Bolter, a sieve (see Swiss Bolting Cloth) -
90 Broche
(1) A loom embroidered fabric where the figuring is produced by swivel shuttles. Made from all-silk yarns. The fabrics are very expensive. An example of a broche is shown in the illustration - woven with four swivel shuttles. There is thus no waste of figuring yam by this method. This cloth is of French make. (2) The French term for brocaded fabrics in which the ornament is produced by additional threads that do not form part of the structure itself. The extra threads float at the back when not used for figure, and the floats are removed during finishing -
91 Calamacho
A satin dress fabric woven of silk yarns in Italy. -
92 Chameleon Taffeta
A fine dress poplin cloth, woven with all coloured silk yarns. The warp is all one colour, but the weft is a doubled yam made from two differently coloured threads with little twist. The effect is one of a changing colour according to how the light plays upon the-fabric. Usually woven in a fine reed with about half the number of picks as there are ends. One quality is made 96 X 48 per inch, 2/80's warp, 2/60's weft. -

94 Church Lace Braid
A fancy braid woven of silk yarns, plain or fancy weave, coloured yams and sometimes gold and silver threads are used for ornament. -
95 Crepaline
A light dress fabric, originally made of silk yarns, later of fine cotton. The borders were crimped by chemical treatment. A better quality was made by using a tight and a slack warp. -

See Domeck. ————————DOMECK (Domick, Darnet, Dornock, Dornek).Terms given to a very low style of cotton damask. The patterns are of the twilled diaper class and the cloth is used for tablecloths. This term was used in the 15th century for a low class of damasks made of wool and silk yarns with ornament of gold threads.
