Créé en juin 1996 par Isabelle Aveline, Zazieweb est un site indépendant conçu pour tous les amoureux du livre, professionnels et amateurs. Le succès est immédiat. Zazieweb se présente d’abord comme une revue en ligne (le graphiste est Olivier Cornu) avec un édito, une rubrique d’actualité, un agenda, une revue de presse, un annuaire des sites et un self-service multimédia. Suivant de près l’actualité du livre sur le réseau, le site se développe et se veut un espace de documentation, d’orientation et de ressources internet. Quelques années plus tard, le site devient un portail offrant de multiples services. L’annuaire de Zazieweb recense plus de 5.000 sites littéraires. Zazieweb offre aussi "des espaces d’échanges et de rencontres pour lecteurs communicants et actifs". Y participe une communauté active de plus de 10.000 membres, ou e-lecteurs. "Qu’est-ce qu’un e-lecteur? Un e-lecteur est un lecteur actif et communicant qui souhaite échanger, discuter, polémiquer avec d’autres lecteurs. Des espaces et services lui sont dédiés sur Zazieweb, sur le mode interactif du web! Zazieweb se présente comme une interface média qui reconstruit, réinvente les relations entre les gens, entre les textes, entre toutes ces articulations possibles qui existent entre les personnes et les livres."
