Lancé en 1985 par la société Microsoft, Windows est un système d’exploitation pour ordinateur personnel. Vingt ans plus tard, ses successeurs (Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows NT, Windows Server 2003) équipent 90% des ordinateurs. Lancé en mai 1999, Windows Media est un ensemble de technologies utilisant l’environnement Windows pour les sons et les images. Lancé en avril 2000, Windows CE est une version simplifiée de Windows pour le premier Pocket PC, le PDA (personal digital assistant) lancé par Microsoft à la même date. Windows CE est remplacé en octobre 2001 par Pocket PC 2002. Lancé en février 2005, MSN Search est un moteur de recherche rebaptisé ensuite Windows Live ou Live Search. Le nouveau Windows, Windows Vista, est lancé le 30 janvier 2007.
