Одна из двух палат высшего законодательного органа США Конгресса [ Congress, U.S.]. В Сенате заседают 100 сенаторов [ senator], по два сенатора от каждого штата США, которые избираются сроком на 6 лет. В ноябре каждого четного года переизбирается треть сенаторов, что позволяет, с одной стороны, обновить состав Сената, а с другой, обеспечить преемственность в его работе. Президентом Сената является вице-президент США [ Vice-President, U.S.], а в его отсутствие временный президент Сената [ president pro tempore]. Сенат обладает всеми законодательными и представительными функциями законодательного органа страны. Кроме того, Сенат США утверждает международные соглашения, заключенные страной, а также президентские назначения на высшие государственные посты, и является единственным органом, имеющим право по представлению Палаты представителей решать вопрос об импичменте [ impeachment] президента.
