Sell (somebody) the idea (to) — убеждать. Как видите, иногда фигуральное использование слова не имеет негативного оттенка. Выражение "I sold him the idea" (Я его убедил) довольно распространенное и вовсе не означает, что ваша идея - надувательство, или что вы ее буквально "продали".
