    pert. to position on the back/rear of an object, behind opp. ἔμπροσθεν (q.v. 2 and cp. Hes., Shield 132f πρόσθεν … ὄπισθε; Jos., Ant. 13, 30 ἔμπροσθεν αὐτῶν … ὄπισθεν) Rv 4:6. Of a scroll w. writing, ἔσωθεν καὶ ὄπισθεν inside and on the back, i.e. on the recto and verso 5:1 (cp. PTebt 58 recto, 37 [III B.C.] τἀπίλοιπα ὀπείσωι=‘the rest is on the back’; ostracon of the Deissmann collection in PMeyer 107 ff, no. 61, 15 [III B.C.] ὀπίσω=‘turn’; PGM 12, 267; 276;). The Revelator evidently draws on Ezk 2:10 to express fullness of communication. On the type of roll ὀπισθόγραφον, s. Pliny, Ep. 3, 5, 17; al. in Wetstein; RCharles, comm. ad loc.
