Grube, I) im allg.: fovĕa (eine tiefe, oben offenstehende Grube, vorzüglich zum Fangen wilder Tiere; daher auch, wie Grube, bildlich von einer Gefahr, Nachstellung, die man jmdm. bereitet etc.). – scrobis od. (kleine) scrobiculus (eine kesselförmig aufgeworfene Grube, um einen Baum hineinzusetzen od. einen Leichnam zu begraben). – fossa (ein langgezogener Graben, um einen Platz zu sichern od.
