51 bite one's thumb at smb.
уст.(bite one's (или the) thumb at smb.)≈ показать кукиш кому-л. цитату]Sampson: "...I will bite my thumb at them, which is a disgrace to them, if they bear it." (W. Shakespeare, ‘Romeo and Juliet’, act I, sc. I) — Самсон: "...Я им кукиш покажу. Такого оскорбления они не стерпят." (перевод Т. Щепкиной-Куперник)
‘Yeh, get off with you!’ said Dyke viciously, lifting an arm to push Johnny away with a blow in the chest; but he saw sparks in Johnny's eyes, and his hand fell to his side. ‘That's better,’ said Johnny. ‘I let no man bite his thumb at me, sir. I'll carry coals for no-one.’ (S. O'Casey, ‘Pictures in the Hallway’, ‘Alice Where Art Thou?’)

52 flee for one's life
(flee (или run) for one's life (тж. австрал. flee, go, run, etc. for the lick of one's life))бежать опрометью, бежать что есть мочи, сломя головуMr. Swiveller and Sampson Brass... rushed out into the street - darting along in the middle of the road, and dashing aside all obstructions, as though they were running for their lives. (Ch. Dickens, ‘The Old Curiosity Shop’, ch.
...hearing Mr. Jackson murmur ‘Puss, puss!’ it ran for its life... and vanished among some shrubs. (J. Galsworthy, ‘Caravan’, ‘Ultima Thule’) —...
Johnny had closed the door quick, had run for his life through the hall out into the street... (S. O'Casey, ‘I Knock at the Door’, ‘His Da, His Poor Da’) — Джонни быстро закрыл дверь и, охваченный страхом перед непонятным, опрометью бросился через прихожую на улицу...
...my God, Winisey, she frightened me. I fled for my life. (D. L. Sayers, ‘Five Red Herrings’, ‘Graham's Story’) —...

53 have the wall
1) держаться у стены, ближе к стене [чтобы не упасть в сточную канаву - в старину, когда тротуаров не было, сточные канавы тянулись по обочинам дороги]...the parlour window... is so close upon the foot-way that the passenger who takes the wall brushes the dim glass with his coat sleeve. (Ch. Dickens, ‘The Old Curiosity Shop’, ch. XXXIII) —...
2) (of smb.) Sampson: "A dog of that house shall move me to stand. I will take the wall of any man or maid of Montague's." (W. Shakespeare, ‘Romeo and Juliet’, act I, sc. 1) — Самсон: "Нет уж, ни от одной собаки из этого дома не побегу! На стену полезу и возьму верх над любым мужчиной, над любой девкой из дома Монтекки." (перевод Т. Щепкиной-Куперник)
The Spaniards... had... no room, in that narrow path, to use their pikes. The English had the wall of them; and to have the wall there, was to have the foe's life at their mercy. (Ch. Kingsley, ‘Westward Hol’, ch. 25) — Испанцам...

Dropping in at Mr. Sampson Brass's office... he had lighted upon Mr. Swiveller, who chanced at the moment to be sprinkling a glass of warm gin and water on the dust of the law, and to be moistening his clay, as the phrase goes, rather copiously. (Ch. Dickens, ‘The Old Curiosity Shop’, ch.

55 the weakest goes to the wall

Gregory: "That shows thee a weak slave; for the weakest goes to the wall." (W. Shakespeare, ‘Romeo and Juliet’, act I, sc. 1) — Самсон: "Нет уж, ни от одной собаки из этого дома не побегу! На стену полезу и возьму верх над любым мужчиной, над любой девкой из дома Монтекки." Грегори: "Да ведь ссорятся-то наши хозяева, а мы только их слуги." (перевод Т. Щепкиной-Куперник)
There's one law in business, lass, you either fight or give in. If you give in you're done. It's the weakest to the wall. (R. Greenwood, ‘Good Angel Slept’, ch.

56 time hangs heavily on smb.'s hands
(time hangs heavily (или heavy) on smb.'s hands)While these acts and deeds were in progress in and out of the office of Sampson Brass, Richard Swiveller, being often left alone therein, began to find the time hang heavy on his hands. (Ch. Dickens, ‘The Old Curiosity Shop’, ch.
‘I could be content,’ went on Hurstwood, ‘if... I had you to go to, you for a companion. As it is, I simply move about from place to place without any satisfaction. Time hangs heavily on my hands.’ (Th. Dreiser, ‘Sister Carrie’, ch.

60 Baxter, George
SUBJECT AREA: Paper and printing[br]b. 31 July 1804 Lewes, Sussex, Englandd. 11 January 1867 Sydenham, London, England[br]English pioneer in colour printing.[br]The son of a printer, Baxter was apprenticed to a wood engraver and there began his search for improved methods of making coloured prints, hitherto the perquisite of the rich, in order to bring them within reach of a wider public. After marriage to the daughter of Robert Harrild, founder of the printing firm of Harrild \& Co., he set up house in London, where he continued his experiments on colour while maintaining the run-of-the-mill work that kept the family. The nineteenth century saw a tremendous advance in methods of printing pictures, produced as separate prints or as book illustrations. For the first three decades colour was supplied by hand, but from the 1830s attempts were made to print in colour, using a separate plate for each one. Coloured prints were produced by chromolithography and relief printing on a small scale. Prints were first made with the latter method on a commercial scale by Baxter with a process that he patented in 1835. He generally used a key plate that was engraved, aquatinted or lithographed; the colours were then printed separately from wood or metal blocks. Baxter was a skilful printer and his work reached a high standard. An early example is the frontispiece to Robert Mudie's Summer (1837). In 1849 he began licensing his patent to other printers, and after the Great Exhibition of 1851 colour relief printing came into its own. Of the plethora of illustrated literature that appeared then, Baxter's Gems of the Great Exhibition was one of the most widely circulated souvenirs of the event.Baxter remained an active printer through the 1850s, but increasing competition from the German coloured lithographic process undermined his business and in 1860 he gave up the unequal struggle. In May of that year, all his oil pictures, engravings and blocks went up for auction, some 3,000 lots altogether. Baxter retired to Sydenham, then a country place, making occasional visits to London until injuries sustained in a mishap while he was ascending a London omnibus led to his death. Above all, he helped to initiate the change from the black and white world of pre-Victorian literature to the riotously colourful world of today.[br]Further ReadingC.T.Courtney Lewis, 1908, George Baxter, the Picture Printer, London: Sampson Lowe, Marsden (the classic account).M.E.Mitzmann, 1978, George Baxter and the Baxter Prints, Newton Abbot: David \& Charles.LRD
