       Un livre numérique dispose d’un format donné, qui permet de le lire sur tel ou tel logiciel de lecture, par exemple le format PDF (portable document format) sur l’Adobe Reader, le format LIT (abrégé du terme anglais "literature") sur le Microsoft Reader, le format PRC (Palm resource) sur le Mobipocket Reader, ou encore le format BRF (braille format) sur un logiciel de lecture braille ou le format DTB (digital talking book) sur un logiciel de synthèse vocale. Ces formats sont le plus souvent dérivés du format OeB (open ebook), un standard de publication de livres numériques disponible en septembre 1999. Formats pionniers, les formats TXT (text) et HTML (hypertext markup language) permettent de lire les textes électroniques quels que soient la plateforme et le logiciel utilisés. Ces formats sont très utilisés pour les oeuvres du domaine public. Un format peut être ouvert, comme le format OeB (open ebook), ou propriétaire, comme le format LIT (literature).
