Последовательности ДНК (гены), однозначно маркирующие определенные участки хромосом и относительно легко идентифицируемые; к 1991 на Рабочих группах по картированию генома человека (HMG - в 1991 в Лондоне прошла HMG-11) разработана система Э.м. таким образом, что в среднем 1 из них приходится на 10 сМ генома, - наиболее «плотно упакованными» с использованием Э.м. являются хромосомы 21, 22 и Х (интервалы в среднем составляют 5 сМ); в последнее время помимо структурных генов в качестве Э.м. начинают интенсивно использовать микросателлиты microsatellites.
