Обычно это делается в два прохода: сначала компоновщик считывает объектные модули, указанные в задании на компоновку, и ищет (в том числе и в библиотеках) модули, на которые ссылаются глобальные переменные в других, уже считанных модулях. Этот процесс называется разрешением ссылок (reference resolution). В ходе выборки модулей компоновщик строит глобальную таблицу имён и проверяет их непротиворечивость, а затем производится объединение модулей в исполняемый файл (executable file) и настройка адресов.
