E. i. 475; margar stéttir, Stj. 299: very freq. in mod. usage, andleg stétt = the clergy; veraldleg stétt = the laity: old writers freq. use it in masc. when in this sense ( stéttr), hann tekr aptr allan fyrra stétt, Th. 5; resignera ábóta-stéttinn, Ann. 1393, Bs. ii. passim.
