6 corrida
(Sp. model spelled same [koríða] < correr 'to run' < Latin currere 'to run' plus the derivative suffix - ida)1) DARE: 1929. A cattle ranching outfit. Only Cobos references this meaning.2) A shed built on the side of a corral. No Spanish source provides a similar gloss. In Southwestern and Mexican Spanish (according to Santamaría, Islas, and Sobarzo), a corrida is generally a roundup in which cowboys gather grazing cattle together for a variety of purposes. -
7 galon
According to Hendrickson, a big horse used for hauling. He quotes Edna Ferber, who suggests that the term is a Mexican adaptation of the American English phrase 'G'long!' used to urge the horses along. However, the Spanish sources listed below provide a much more credible derivation for this term. Sobarzo notes that in Sonora a galán is a lively, graceful, well-proportioned horse. The DRAE defines galán as a good-looking, well-proportioned man who carries himself in an elegant or graceful manner. A Spanish origin for this term is much more plausible, since it was the Mexican/Spanish vaqueros who taught the Anglos cowboying and ranching. -
8 cow savvy
An understanding of cattle or of herding techniques or the ranching business, said of humans or horses. -
9 Spanish
The English adjective is used in a number of combinations to refer to things of Spanish or Mexican origin or associated with Spanish or Mexican culture. Those pertinent to cowboying and ranching are listed below.
