1 quirt
Bentley: 1846.1) A riding whip with a short, often weighted, handle used to discipline an unruly horse or to encourage a slow one.2) As a verb, to hit or whip with a quirt. The DRAE glosses cuarta as a short riding whip. Santamaría concurs, adding that it is made entirely of a type of leather called peal. At one end it has a handle or ring made of the same type of leather the cowboy puts over his wrist, and at the other end is a thin strap used as a whip.Alternate form: quisto. -

8 romal
A braided whip or quirt made from the ends of reins. Blevins indicates that these whips were about three feet long and were commonly used by Californios. The DRAE gives several descriptive entries, including a halter attached to an animal's cavesson. Cobos glosses it as a rope or a leash attached to a horse's reins.
