(Chantraine Formation 259) on onomatopoetical basis; cf. ἐποποῖ, πόποπο of the call of the bird (Ar. Av. 58 resp. 227). Parallel names in other languages: Arm. popop, Lat. upupa, Latv. pupukis etc. Pok. 325, W.-Hofmann s. upupa. The word can prob. not be called Indo-European.
