En 1969, elle s'est scindée en deux factions: la "Provisional IRA", qui a recours à la violence, et la "Official IRA", qui privilégiait un réglement politique du conflit en Irlande du Nord. En 1995, au début du processus de paix qui a abouti à l'accord de 1998 (le Good Friday Agreement, voir cet encadré) la "Provisional IRA" a déclaré un cessez-le-feu. Cependant, quelques groupes dissidents, notamment la "Continuity IRA" et la "Real IRA", ont poursuivi les actes terroristes. -
