Esprit visionnaire, Marshall McLuhan (1911-1980), professeur à l’Université de Toronto (Canada), développe dans les années 1960 le concept d’une société de l’information basée sur le fait que les médias de communication transformeront un jour le monde en un "village global". Ses livres ont un grand retentissement, notamment Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man (McGraw-Hill, 1964) et The Medium is the Message (Bantam Books / Random House, 1967).
