Объяснение того, что продавцы часто стремятся к сговору на рынке вместо конкуренции, которая была бы выгоднее для общества. Смысл ее в такой ситуации: двух заключенных А и Б обвинили в совместном убийстве, лишили возможности сговора и поставили условие: если сознаются оба, каждый получит по пяти лет тюрьмы, если сознается один, он получит только год, а другой — десять, если не сознаются оба — каждый получит по два года. Ситуация иллюстрируется следующей платежной матрицей: Олигопольные фирмы (см. Олигополия) стоят перед дилеммой заключенного, когда ни одна из них не может ни доверять другой, ни ожидать, что ее конкурент назначит более низкую цену (и таким образом, выиграет в конкуренции).
