Инверсия приоритетов происходит, когда объект с низким приоритетом обрабатывается или передается прежде объекта высокого приоритета. В недостаточно хорошо спроектированных CAN устройствах может наблюдаться внутренняя либо внешняя инверсия приоритета.

Если узлу необходимо передать два высоко приоритетных CAN сообщения, но он не может отослать второе из них сразу вслед за межкадровым промежутком, другой узел сети может успеть передать низко приоритетное сообщение. Такая ситуация называется внешней инверсией приоритета.

внутренняя инверсия приоритета
К внутренней инверсии приоритета приводит ситуация, когда низко приоритетное сообщение не может быть передано в CAN сеть вследствие значительного трафика высокоприоритетных сообщений. При этом, если в устройстве возникает запрос на передачу высокоприоритетного сообщения, он не может быть удовлетворен CAN контроллером, поскольку низко приоритетное сообщение по-прежнему ожидает своей очереди на отправку.
