22 Duplex Prints
Cotton cloths printed on both sides in two distinct operations. The designs may or may not be the same. Fabrics which are printed so heavily on the face that the design shows through on the back" are not duplex prints, but "Bang-Through." Duplex prints are the result of two distinct operations. -

A class of medium to coarse plain weave cotton prints for the South African markets and are mostly blue grounds with white patterns, with a good firm finish. Qualities vary greatly. -
24 Javanese Batik Prints
These are mostly used by both men and women for shirts or loin cloths. There are three kinds of Javanese batik prints: (1) The sarong or Kain Kapala; (2) the Kain Pandjang (or Jarit in Central Java); and (3) the Dodot, which is variously of silk or cotton. The sarong differs from the Kain Pandjang in having its ends sewn together, and in having a triangular device (the Kapala, a term meaning " head ") on that part of the cloth which covers the left hip. These two are for ordinary wear, while the dodot, a much longer cloth than the others, is worn on ceremonial occasions (see Batik). The batik industry was introduced into Java about A.D. 400 There is very little difference between jeans and jeanettes. 25 Pintado Prints
A general term in South America for the cheaper styles of prints in 30-in. to 35-in. widths. The name meant painted or printed and was originally used for chintzes in the 16th and 17th centuries. It was the name given by the Portuguese to the Indian chintzes. -

30 Bang-Thro Prints
A term given to a style of designs printed so heavily that both design and colour show on the back as well as on the face. The copper roller is cut deeper than for ordinary printing in order to take up more colour. The illustration is an example (see also Pushing) -
31 Batik Prints
The batik print is a cloth used for garments in the East, Java, Malay, etc. The sarong is the usual and principal garment for men and women and was decorated originally by the natives in this style of print. A good style of this printed fabric in the Batik colours is illustrated (see Javanese Batik) -
32 Cohras Prints
Native-made coloured cotton cloth on which a design is printed with wax, when dyed the wax resists the colour and only the unwaxed ground is coloured. The wax is afterwards removed, giving a white pattern on a coloured ground. -
33 Discharge Prints
These are fabrics that are first dyed in a solid colour, such as blue, dried without fixing the colour, then passed through a printing machine and printed with a chemical substance which acting upon the dye discharges or clears it from the fabric. When finished the cloth will have white figuring on a blue ground. -
34 Extracted Prints
Fabrics first printed with a preparation substance and afterwards dyed. After washing, the dye is discharged where it covered the preparation substance to form the design. -
35 Fayence Prints
A cotton fabric printed with indigo blue paste. The colour is mixed with other material into a paste and the cloth printed with the mixture. The fabric is then treated in some alkaline solution which fixes the blue colour. The cloth is made about 72 ends and 76 picks per inch, 32's T., 36's W. -
36 Florida Prints
A trade term in Rumania for printed cotton muslin. -
37 Fukiye Prints
These fabric pictures were produced in the 18th century by the Japanese. The cloth was resist printed with some wax or other substance and the colour was blown on to the parts not bearing the resist through a brass funnel. This method of ornamenting fabric is said to have been copied from the Chinese. -
38 Indigo Prints
All cotton cloths dyed indigo blue with the pattern formed by either a resist or discharge process. This is a general term, and all indigo blue fabrics may come under it. -
39 Intaglio Prints
This term is used to describe fabrics with painted designs such as awning. The colour are pigments mixed with varnish, and a thinning liquid reduces the mixture to the right consistency. -
40 Perrotine Prints
Block-printed fabrics produced by means of a large machine invented by a Frenchman named Perrotine. The blocks are fixed to an iron frame and the cloth is passed between the blocks and iron plates.
