Аномалия энергосистемы, вызванная отказом первичной цепи системы, первичного оборудования, аппарата, и которая обычно требует немедленного отсоединения поврежденной цепи, установки, оборудования или аппарата от энергосистемы путем отключения соответствующими выключателями.
Примечание - Повреждение в энергосистеме может быть поперечным, продольным или комбинированным.

Основную защиту применяют для защиты от поражения электрическим током при нормальных условиях, характеризующихся отсутствием повреждений. Основная защита предусматривает применение мер предосторожности, которые исключают прикосновение человека и животных к опасным токоведущим частям, находящимся под напряжением. К таким мерам относят: использование основной изоляции опасных токоведущих частей, которая также препятствует появлению напряжения на открытых проводящих частях электрооборудования, размещение токоведущих частей в оболочках, за ограждениями или вне зоны досягаемости, применение барьеров, а также другие электрозащитные меры.
