Opuntia; эти кактусы были завезены в Австралию из Америки как домашние растения, но, высаженные в садах, они быстро распространились, и к 1900 занимали площадь 4 млн. га; особ. серьёзной проблемой стала одна из разновидностей – Opuntia vulgaris; между 1900 и 1920 гг. площадь, занимаемая ею, увеличивалась ежегодно на 500 тыс. га; в 1920 был создан Совет по борьбе с «колючей грушей» {Prickly Pear Board}; по его заказу в США исследовались способы биологического контроля над распространением опунции; в результате этих исследований был выбран мотылёк из Аргентины Cactoblastis cactorum, гусеницы кот. питаются кактусами; личинки мотылька были завезены в Австралию и распределены по р-нам; в 1934 огромные площади, заросшие опунцией, были освобождены от неё и дальнейшее её распространение прекратилось; для многих сельскохозяйственных р-нов, особ. для Квинсленда, 5/6 территории кот. были покрыты зарослями кактусов, это было решением серьёзной экономической проблемы; жители Бунарги {Boonarga} воздвигли мемориал с надписью 'Boonarga-Cacto-blastis-Memorial Hall')Australia and New Zealand.
