Развитие нескольких зародышей из одной зиготы, в результате чего образуются однояйцевые близнецы; различают специфическую (типичную для данного вида - известна у некоторых мшанок Bryozoa, паразитических перепончатокрылых насекомых, броненосцев) и случайную П. (потенциально может происходить практически у всех животных); у растений истинная П. - развитие нескольких зародышей из одной зиготы в результате неправильного деления (у тюльпанов), и ложная П. - развитие в семяпочке нескольких зародышевых мешков (земляника Fragaria и др.), развитие более одной из четырех мегаспор (лилия Lilium, манжетка Alchemilla и др.) или развитие апоспорических зародышевых мешков (ястребинка Hieracium, полынь Artemisia).
