Форма отношения полов, при которой одна самка спаривается более чем с одним самцом; в общественных отношениях вида (у различных птиц и др.) различают последовательную, одновременную и кооперативную П.; П. может являться элементом полигинно-полиандрической системы (например, у страуса нанду Rhea americana - самка откладывает яйца в гнезда нескольких самцов); иногда термин «П» рассматривается как синоним термина «полиспермия» в случае, когда в одной яйцеклетке находится более одного мужского пронуклеуса.
