Le CPL (courant porteur en ligne) est une technologie permettant d’utiliser le réseau électrique d’un bâtiment comme moyen de transport des données, avec un débit situé dans un premier temps entre 8 et 14 Mbps (mégabits par seconde). Un câblage supplémentaire ou spécifique n’est pas nécessaire, puisque le CPL fait appel aux fréquences élevées du réseau électrique sans interférer avec le courant électrique classique. Le CPL permet aussi de relier les ordinateurs entre eux, toujours par le réseau électrique, afin de partager la connexion internet. Plus tard, il pourrait procurer une bande passante nettement plus large pouvant atteindre 190 Mbps, grâce au procédé HD-PLC (high definition - power line communication), ce qui permettrait de connecter à la fois ordinateur(s) et télévision(s) par le circuit électrique. L’utilisation de la technologie CPL débute au printemps 2004 avec plusieurs expériences pilotes, notamment dans le département de la Manche, en Normandie. Cette technologie est également utilisée par les entreprises, qui utilisent l’infrastructure électrique pour créer un réseau local ou partager un accès ADSL (asymmetric digital subscriber line). Sa commercialisation débute en avril 2005. Le sigle anglais équivalent est PLC (power line communication). -
