Le plus souvent en téléchargement libre, un "player" est un logiciel de lecture audio et vidéo. Ce logiciel permet de décompresser un fichier audio ou vidéo, de le sauvegarder (éventuellement) et d’écouter et/ou de regarder le fichier sur l’appareil de son choix: ordinateur, baladeur numérique, assistant personnel, téléphone portable, smartphone, etc. Quelques exemples de players: le RealPlayer de RealNetworks, le QuickTime d’Apple et le Windows Media player de Microsoft.
