Глагол играть передается английскими play, play on, play at, play with, которые не являются взаимозаменяемыми. (о спортивных, азартных и детских играх) также передается английским переходным глаголом play: играть на скрипке – to play the violin, играть в футбол – to play football, играть в карты – to play cards, играть в прятки – to play hide-and-seek. Однако в тех случаях, когда упоминается исполняемое произведение, перед названием музыкального инструмента ставится предлог on: to play Chopin on the piano, to play Kabalevsky on the violin. В значении 'играть на сцене, исполнять роль' также употребляется переходный глагол play: to play the leading part, to play Hamlet. Play at употребляется в современном языке, когда речь идет о детских играх, не имеющих установленных правил и основанных целиком на фантазии играющих: to play at being soldiers, to play at keeping house (play at означает в подобных случаях 'притворяться, изображая собой кого-л. (в прямом значении, а также в значении 'шутить, обращаться легкомысленно, несерьезно') соответствует английское play with: to play with the cat, to play with someone's affections. прост.cf. take to one's heels; show smb. one's heels (a clean pair of heels); turn tail; cut and run; cut one's lucky; do a bunk; beat it < quick>; cut dirt Amer. (М. Салтыков-Щедрин, Повесть о том, как один мужик двух генералов прокормил) — The muzhik rose to his feet and saw that this was no joking matter. These were very stern officials. At first he wanted to show them his heels, but they pounced on him and held on like grim death.
(А. Новиков-Прибой, В бухте "Отрада") — 'They've got scouts, the blighters - would you believe it! Just like a regular army. But the moment he saw we hadn't come here to play hide-and-seek, he beat it quick.'
(К. Симонов, Живые и мёртвые) — 'Fear has big eyes!... They fell down in fright, and instead of getting his men together, the senior in command abandoned half of them and did a bunk down the road.'
(В. Астафьев, Старое кино) — I was climbing the creaking stairs of an old Moscow house and on every flight I paused to draw breath, trying to make up my mind: should I turn tail? For the first time in my life I was going to visit a real live actress. It was rather alarming!
