На уровне ритма, операторской работы и актерской игры Лоуси удается постоянно поддерживать трагическое напряжение. В нем нет ничего общего с привычным саспенсом детективных сюжетов (поскольку мы еще до начала фильма знаем, кто убийца), и оно связано не столько с неумолимым течением времени (тех суток, что остались в распоряжении героя), сколько с мастерским барочным стилем Лоуси. Трагедия здесь рождается за счет того, что подсознание персонажей прорывается на поверхность и становится видимым. Между Майклом Редгрейвом (который в перерывах между съемками, подобно своему персонажу, впадал в запои) и Лео Маккерном складываются на экране странные и удивительно сильные взаимоотношения: антагонизм с примесью обоюдного восхищения. Особенно поражает работа Лео Маккерна, в целом довольно посредственного актера, которого Лоуси заставил превзойти себя. Личные и общественные комплексы персонажа выплывают на поверхность во время его приступов гнева, подлинно трагической ярости, которые составляют основу фильма.
