Настоящее имя - Мэри Людвиг Хэйс Макколи [McCauley, Mary Ludwig Hays] (девичье имя и фамилия по первому и второму мужу). Получила свое прозвище (pitcher - кувшин), так как подносила воду раненым солдатам Континентальной армии [ Continental Army] во время сражения при Монмуте [ Monmouth, Battle of] (1778). Согласно легенде, приняла участие в бою в качестве канонира, заменив погибшего мужа. Получала пожизненную пенсию от властей Пенсильвании. Питчер, Молли (1754—1832), героиня Войны за независимость. Вместе с мужем участвовала в сражении при Монмуте [Monmouth] 28 июня 1778. Во время страшной жары она подносила воду солдатам, за что и получила своё прозвище (pitcher кувшин). Когда пал в бою её муж, она заняла его место у орудия.
