1 RLG Union Catalog
Créé en 1980 par le RLG (Research Libraries Group), RLIN (Research Libraries Information Network, voir la notice suivante) devient en 2003 le RLG Union Catalog. Le RLG Union Catalog est l’un des deux grands catalogues collectifs mondiaux, l’autre étant WorldCat, géré par OCLC (Online Computer Library Center). En 2003, le RLG Union Catalog comprend 126 millions de notices bibliographiques (correspondant à 42 millions de documents: livres, cartes, manuscrits, films, bandes sonores, etc.) émanant de bibliothèques et centres de documentation situés dans 300 pays différents (dépôts d’archives, bibliothèques de musées, bibliothèques universitaires, bibliothèques publiques, bibliothèques de droit, bibliothèques techniques, bibliothèques d’entreprise, bibliothèques d’art, etc.). Utilisé pour le catalogage, le prêt inter-bibliothèques ou encore le contrôle des archives et des manuscrits, ce catalogue collectif regroupe les notices de tous les organismes adhérents, avec si besoin plusieurs notices pour le même document (et non pas une seule notice par document comme dans WorldCat). 370 langues différentes y sont représentées, avec translittération des notices de documents publiés dans les langues JACKPHY (japonais, arabe, chinois, coréen, persan, hébreu et yiddish) et en cyrillique. En 2004, le RLG Union Catalog comprend 130 millions de notices. Au printemps 2004, une version web de ce catalogue est disponible en accès libre sous le nom de RedLightGreen, suite à une phase pilote lancée en automne 2003. Après trois ans d’activité, le site est fermé en novembre 2006, et le RLG est intégré à OCLC.
