Условный неопределенный термин, используемый в трех значениях:
1) явление длительного охлаждения горных пород верхней части земной коры до нулевой и отрицательной температуры;
2) слой или область распространения долго неоттаивающих горных пород (т.н. многолетнемёрзлый слой);
3) горные породы, сцементированные замерзшей в них влагой (многолетнемёрзлые породы).
