This term is given to a special weave which is much used in both the silk and woollen industries. A peculiar pebbled appearance is given to the face of the cloth. Generally woven on 24 staves for silk and 12 to 24 for wool goods. In the design - Black squares = warp up. Crosses = 4-end sateen weft base. Circles = base of warp construction. The word is French for a small pattern -

A worsted fabric in twill hop-sack weave weighing 15-oz. or over for 58-in. The cloth is dyed indigo. Woven from 2/36's botany warp and 66's weft, and in fine reeds and picks, about 92 X 160. The finishing process shrinks the fabric about 20 per cent. The diagram shows the weave. Another cloth is woven with a silk warp and a fine botany weft in a weft rib weave. Used for dresses. This term was originally adopted as a registered trade name for an armure silk tie, but is now generally used for silk or worsted fabric with the pebbled weave of the armure. A fabric used for army clothing which had this name is made of all two-fold worsted yams and in a double twill weave -
