    v. trans.
    Preserve, retain: P. and V. σώζειν, φυλάσσειν.
    Hold: P. and V. ἔχειν, Ar. and V. ἴσχειν (rare P.).
    Protect: P. and V. φυλάσσειν, φραυρεῖν, V. ἐκφυλάσσειν, ῥύεσθαι, Ar. and P. τηρεῖν; see Guard.
    Observe, maintain: P. and V. σώζειν, φυλάσσειν, διαφυλάσσειν, διασώζειν.
