    A term used in the U.S.A. to distinguish a cotton cloth finished to imitate linen. The cloth is an ordinary plain fabric about 64 ends and 68 picks per inch. The finish is not permanent, but is removed by the first washing.

    The short fibres abstracted when combing wool. These are spun again and generally dyed. Ordinary noils contain a percentage of vegetable matter and when free from this the term "Clear noil " is used. Silk noils are the broken and short fibres that are left when waste silk has been torn up, dressed and combed.

    An oblong piece of cloth, folded about one third over the upper part, and fastened on the shoulders by brooches. This was the ordinary dress of the ancient Greek maidens. It was a very simple and elegant costume and imparted dignity to the figure (see Peplum). Palla Gallica was a short Roman garment like a Tabarb, open in front and behind; worn by the Gauls and adopted by the Romans who called it Caracalla. ———————— Indian term for printed Chaddar.

  • 127 Roquetin

    A French term given to a method of forming fancy edges to narrow fabrics. Figuring threads are wound on special bobbins and used as extra warp, very slightly weighted so that the yarn can be drawn off quickly. These extra warp or roquetin threads take the place of weft, and interweave with the ordinary warp at each side of the fabric.

    A term of the 17th and early 18th century for woollen serges that had been dried in stoves and made whiter than ordinary serges with the action of chemicals.
